Minister Wimal Weerawansa has said that the intention of the Government was to make Colombo a beautiful city devoid of shanties.
The Minister said that this work will be carried out within the next five years. He said the Government planned to dismantle slums and instead build better habitats for the slum dwellers.
The Minister was speaking at the launch of a project to reconstruct the Serpentime Flats in Borella. The flats are being rebuilt after 45 years. It is being carried under the “Nagamu Purawara” Programme. The estimated cost is 25 million rupees. 352 families will benefit by this programme. It is desired to complete the reconstruction work by the 31st of August this year. Joining on this occasion, Parliamentarian Thilanga Sumathipala disclosed that the Government’s intention was to build 8000 new houses on behalf of families living with fewer facilities. A group including Ministry officials was present.
