The UNP has today said the government was trying to victimize the university lecturers engaged in union action demanding a salary hike.
UNP parliamentarian Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told a press conference that the government was trying to neutralize the union action through the university deans.
He has said that the government was trying to blame the lecturers and the opposition without holding a proper discussion with them to resolve the issues.
According to him, the government needed to understand the importance of university lecturers and their role in the country’s development.
Kariyawasam has observed that the dons are given an entertainment allowance of Rs 300, which was fixed in 1970s and that several facilities, which the dons have enjoyed, had been taken away.
“This is nothing but victimization,” he has added.
