Fishermen from the North have sought a meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa to find a solution to the problem of Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters.<
The Alliance for Northern People Fishermen’s Association (NPFA) is to request the President to take a firm stand on stopping the intrusion by Indian fishermen into Sri Lankan waters and to take up the issue with the newly elected Tamil Nadu government and the Central Government of India.
NPFA Spokesperson Herman Kumar has told the media that the association wants the government to take a firm stand on the issue.
He has said the election of a new state government in Tamil Nadu led by Jayalalithaa is not expected to bring about a change in the current situation.
Kumar has said the association planned to meet with the ministers representing the North as well.
