The Inter Company Employees Union (ICEU) today warned of severe union action if the government passed the proposed pension scheme for the private sector and even bring work at the Labor Ministry to a standstill.
The ICEU said the unions would surround the Labor Ministry building in Narahenpita until the pension scheme is withdrawn if the government presented the bill to parliament next week.
ICEU Head, Wasantha Samarasinghe told the media today that the Labor Ministry had the responsibility to ensure that the workers’ rights are safeguarded at all times.
The ICEU today held a protest outside the Labor Ministry calling on the government to withdraw the proposed pension scheme and introduce a proper scheme that is beneficial to the working masses.
Samarasinghe said the ICEU would conduct awareness campaigns in the country about the pension scheme till the 23rd and a final decision on the matter would be made on that day.
Samarasinghe however added that the ICEU was prepared to discuss with th government to prepare a proper pension scheme for the private sector that was beneficial to the working masses.
