A former small-town mayor who had previous run-ins with the law was shot and killed by a local police officer after an altercation along a dirt road, authorities said Monday.
Bert Reeves, 40, was shot by the officer who fired once, said Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey. Reeves was taken to Colleton Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The officer's name was not released.
Harvey said the State Law Enforcement Division is handling the investigation, as it does with all officer-involved shootings. A message left for Harvey seeking additional information wasn't immediately returned late Monday night.
SLED spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons confirmed that the agency was investigating, but said she would not be releasing information immediately. Timmons didn't immediately return a telephone call or email seeking additional comment.
Reeves served as mayor of Cottageville, a community of about 700 people, about 30 miles northwest of Charleston. In summer 2006, he tested positive for a byproduct of a chemical found in marijuana after his truck crashed. He resigned that December.
