The President has joined the people in celebrating the Wesak festival conforming to the theme of the event.
The temple bells started to ring between 5.45am to 5.50am marking the 2600th Sambuddatva Jayanthi. The President formally declared the year spanning from this Wesak Day to next year’s Wesak Day as the Sambuddatva Jayanthi year from the historic Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi premises in Anuradhapura. The Wesak Day is celebrated by engaging in Sil and meditation programmes, as well as by making decorations, erecting pandols, and holding Danselas and Bhakithi gee programmes.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa also joined the devotees by observing Sil at the shrine room of the President’s House. The President, First Lady and the others were administered Sil by President of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Nikaya Most Venerable Kotugoda Dhammavasa Thera. Thereafter the President participated in an alms giving. The special Poya Day Dhamma sermon at the Temple Trees was delivered by Ven. Medagoda Sumanatissa Thera, chief incumbent of the Pepiliyana Sunethra Devi Pirivena.

telecast special features to mark the 2600th Sambuddatva Jayanthi. A number of programmes are being telecast centering the Gangarama temple in Hunupitiya. Chairman of the ITN Rosmond Senaratne and other senior officials are also participating in the programme held under the guidance of the chief incumbent of Gangarama Ven. Galaboda Gnanissara Thera. The ‘Buddha Rashmi’ Wesak zone will be launched tomorrow. Media sponsorship for the programme will be provided by the ITN and the Lakhanda Radio. It is being held under the patronage of the Presidential Secretariat while it will be inaugurated by the President tomorrow.
The Lakhanda Radio will broadcast its Buddha Rashmi programme from the Sri Dharma Vidyaloka temple at Rukmale in Pannipitiya.
