Authorities say the South Carolina police officer who shot and killed a former small-town mayor has been placed on paid leave.
Cottageville Police Chief John Craddock said Tuesday that Bert Reeves was shot once in the chest Monday afternoon with Officer Randall Price's department-issued .40-caliber Glock handgun.
State police are investigating the shooting but have not released any details.
An attorney for Reeves' family told The Associated Press that relatives feel the officer should have used a stun gun to subdue the 40-year-old father of two.
Reeves resigned in 2006 after tests revealed he had a byproduct of a chemical found in marijuana when he crashed his pickup truck. He was originally charged with driving under the influence, but it was dropped after a blood-alcohol test was negative.
