Charleston County reverses decision on interstate

Charleston County Council has changed its decision not to build an extension of Interstate 526.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported council voted 5-4 Tuesday to reverse last month's decision against building the road in order to avoid having to repay the state $11.6 million.
The South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank had ruled that Charleston County violated its agreement with the state when it voted against the project to stretch the road over Johns and James islands.
The bank last week ordered the county to repay the money within two months.
Council Chairman Teddie Pryor said that would prompt layoffs or service cuts.
