State Education Department cuts 10 jobs

Facing a 15-percent cut in its state budget, the state Department of Education is laying off 10 of its roughly 900 employees.
Spokesman J.W. Ragley said the cuts are partly because of state budget cuts and partly because of a restructuring plan by new state Superintendent of Education Mick Zais.
The jobs range from low-level positions to deputy-level ones, Ragley said. About half of Education Department's employees work as mechanics or in other transportation-related jobs, operating the state-run school bus system.
