The Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) today filed a petition before the Supreme Court against the leadership training programmes at military camps to be introduced to new entrants to universities from Monday (23).
The Higher Education Ministry has announced that all new entrants to universities would have to attend a newly formulated leadership training programme that would be conducted at military camps.
The IUSF expressed its opposition to the programme when it was first announced several weeks back.
IUSF Convener Sanjeewa Bandara expressed doubts over the government’s move and claimed neither the Higher Education Ministry nor the University Grants Commission (UGC) could make arbitrary decisions without discussing with students and parents.
He said the university students needed good training programmes in English and IT.
