VCs Asked Not To Pay Salaries To Lecturers

May 19, 2011 9:17:54 AM - thesundayleader.lk

The government has decided not to pay salaries to the university lecturers who have abstained from carrying out their duties as part of the trade union action launched by them demanding a salary hike.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a circular to all university vice chancellors asking them not to pay the salaries for the month of May to the lecturers who have resorted to trade union action.

The UGC has asked the vice chancellors of universities to act according to the Establishments Code.

UGC Chairman Prof. Gamini Samaranayake has been quoted in the media as saying that those who are paid from public funds are required to comply with the regulations laid down in the Establishments Code.

The Establishments Code states that only those who have performed their assigned duties are eligible to receive a salary.
