President Rajapaksa offers flowers to the new Samadhi statue at the Sri Vidyananda Pirivena Maha Vihara.
The President arrived at the Buddha statue which had been built at the Sri Vidyananda Pirivena Maha Vihara at Vihara Road in Matale and was the first to offer flowers. The statue had been built in parallel to the 2600th Sambuddhatva Jayanthi. It is about 35 feet high. The statue was built with contributions from philanthropists. After offering Ata Pirikara to the statue, the President participated in religious observances. Members of the Maha Sangha headed by the Chief Incumbent of the Sri Vidyananda Pirivena Maha Vihara, the Ven. Thismada Nandarama Nayaka Thera chanted Seth Pirith and blessed the president. The President presented a Buddha statue to the Ven. Olaganwatte Chandrasiri Thera, a senior lecturer of the Rajarata University who played a key role in the construction of the Samadhi Buddha statue. The President also met devotees present at the Vihara and had cordial discussions with them. Among those present were many Parliamentarians.
