Today is the 39th anniversary of the constitution of an Independent Sovereign Republic of Sri Lanka.
Our motherland which was trampled by the iron boots of imperialism for centuries won independence in 1948 receiving the right of self-determination although it did not grant full sovereignty to the country. The representatives of the people and the Prime Minister had to serve the British Crown. The country was under the Governor appointed by the Queen. The Alliance led by Ms. Sirimavo Bandaranaike put the foundation to end this state of partial colonialism and to create a system of our own. Thirty nine years ago when the 22nd of May dawned in 1972, the Members of Parliament met at the Nava Rangahala in Royal College and declared the Republic of Sri Lanka replacing the name Ceylon used until then and passed the new constitution. Sri Lankans will gratefully remember this day which created a Sovereign Republic protecting it from foreign influence and providing Supremacy to the people.
