Members say Press Council is not an institution that suppresses journalists

May 22, 2011 12:40:49 PM - itnnews.lk

The Members of the Press Council have stressed that legal action has not been taken against any journalist by the Press Council and that the propaganda being spread by certain media organizations is totally untrue.

Chairman of the Press Council W. Dayaratna said that the Press Council has not taken any legal action against any journalist and that they are surprised by the news. He said that theirs is a constitutional organization. He expressed regret about resorting to such behavior at a time when the organization is able to serve justice. He said that the journalists who have not committed any wrong will not be punished. Their aim is to redress the prevailing shortcomings.

Senior Journalist Ariyananda Dombagahawatta said that there should be an institution that redresses the grievances caused by the media. It does not mean that the institution took legal action against any journalist or threatened anyone during the past period. He said that it has only meted out justice to wronged parties.
