The Cherokee County coroner has identified two people killed in a fiery tractor trailer crash that damaged a bridge and forced northbound traffic on Interstate 85 to detour around the area.
Coroner Dennis Fowler said Monday that 54-year-old Steven T. Woods Sr. of Athens, Ga., apparently fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into one of the supports for the S.C. Highway 150 bridge early Sunday morning. Woods died of head and neck injuries when he was thrown from the truck.
Co-driver 42-year-old Gregory Lockhart of Buford, Ga., was trapped in the sleeper section of the cab when the truck burst into flames. Fowler says Lockhart died of smoke inhalation and other injuries.
Northbound lanes of I-85 near Gaffney likely will be closed until Wednesday.
