Restrictions against irregular sale of labour in the foreign market are being strengthened.
The Foreign Employment Bureau has issued a circular banning the use of Visas by the employment agencies which are issued for the recruitment of labour through private means. The circular issued with regard to recruitment to Saudi Arabia has already been sent to the employment agencies. The circular banned the recruitment of workers on visas other than those issued to the foreign employment agencies with the Saudi Government’s approval. The Foreign Employment Bureau said that this measure was taken considering the issues and complaints regarding employment in Saudi Arabia. The Foreign Employment Agencies are issued visas after obtaining necessary information with regard to the employer or the organization. Accordingly a valid contract is to be obtained with details such as the address of the workplace, name of the employer, salary and contract period. When obtaining visas through private means the relevant information has to be provided to the Sri Lankan Embassy in Saudi Arabia for reasons of job security.
