The Prime Minister has instructed the Central Cultural Fund to accelerate conservation work of the archeological sites.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne has issued these instructions at the Administrative Board Meeting of the Central Cultural Fund. The Prime Minister has also requested for a complete report of the conservation work being carried out in places of archeological interest. There have been complaints that the conservation work in the archeological sites is carried out at a slow pace. The Prime Minister said that this situation is absurd despite the modern technology. The meeting also focused on drawing more tourists to the archeological sites. Minister Basil Rajapaksa said that more attention should be given to develop infrastructure at these places. The Minister pointed out that many benefits can be achieved by the sale of replicas of such sites. Accordingly it was decided to develop the replica manufacturing centre in Bataliya, Gampaha. Minister T.B. Ekanayake was amongst those who participated in the occasion.
