The President has called upon the University Lecturers to fulfil their responsibilities towards the students.
He stressed that the government will not neglect its duties towards them. Addressing the University Lecturers at a meeting held with them at the Temple Trees yesterday the President made this statement. Presenting their problems, the University lecturers pointed out that they always support the programme of the Government and expressed their displeasure for not granting a research allowance by the past budget. The President noted the Government’s readiness to negotiate with the University Lecturers. Certain political parties are attempting to create a conflict through this issue. The President pointed out the need to work with understanding in dealing with the problem. The President said that it is difficult to increase salaries before six months are completed since a salary increase was effected through the last budget. The President also focused on reduction of the time taken when duty free vehicles are being purchased by the University Lecturers. Minister S.B. Dissanayake was amongst those who participated in the discussion.
