The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death of a prisoner at the Kirkland Reception and Evaluation Center.
Jerry Dalziel, 41, was found unresponsive in his cell where another inmate also was staying and was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.
Dalziel had no apparent injuries but an autopsy revealed that he been strangled, Watts said.
The S.C. Department of Corrections turned the case over to SLED, said Clark Newsome, a corrections department spokesman. Dalziel had been admitted to the prison system March 10 after he was convicted in Florence County of lewd acts against two children who were younger than 16, Newsome said.
