The annual "100 Deadly Days of Summer" are upon us.
With Memorial Weekend, the summer travel season officially begins, and AAA Carolinas is projecting a heavy traffic load this year.
Last year, in the 78-hour period from 6 p.m. on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend to Monday at midnight, 10 people died on South Carolina roads, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety said.
In conjunction with summer travel safety awareness, the department is in the midst of its Buckle Up, South Carolina! campaign, aimed at increasing seat belt use by travelers, especially among teenagers.
Of the 231 occupants in vehicle wrecks in South Carolina so far this year, 128 of those killed were not buckled up. On average, 70 percent of teenagers killed in South Carolina traffic wrecks are not buckled up.
