May 27, 2011 1:27:00 PM - thestate.com
While S.C. lawmakers and Amazon.com were wrestling over a controversial business deal, Midlands readers were merrily giving the online retailer plenty of business, it seems.

Columbia was ranked 16th nationally in Amazon.com's list of "Most Well-Read Cities in America," sandwiched between number 15 Bellevue, Wash., and number 17, St. Louis, Mo.

The list, released Thursday, was derived from Amazon.com's sales data for print as well as Kindle reader formats for books, newspapers and magazines since Jan. 1, 2011. It was based on per-capita consumption in cities with more than 100,000 residents.

The complete list:

1. Cambridge, Mass. 2. Alexandria, Va. 3. Berkeley, Calif. 4. Ann Arbor, Mich. 5. Boulder, Colo. 6. Miami 7. Salt Lake City 8. Gainesville, Fla. 9. Seattle 10. Arlington, Va. 11. Knoxville, Tenn. 12.
