The federal prison in Hampton County has been on lockdown since a fight broke out Thursday night in the prison yard that sent nine inmates to area hospitals.
Prison staffers at the Estill prison were unhurt and all the inmates are alive, Eugene Carlton, a prison spokesman, said this afternoon.
The fight erupted about 8 p.m. Thursday, prison officials said in a statement issued early Friday morning.
Carlton would not elaborate about the fight or the injuries but said this afternoon that a second statement is to be released shortly.
The inmates were taken to hospitals, and the public was never in danger, the first statement said.
