University Lecturers Paid For May

May 28, 2011 5:11:22 AM - thesundayleader.lk

University lecturers have said they have received the salary for the month of May, after the University Grants Commission (UGC) claimed a few weeks earlier that lecturers involved in trade union action would not be paid their salaries for this month.

The UGC a few weeks earlier informed all university vice chancellors not to pay the salaries to lecturers engaged in union action. The Commission asked vice chancellors to strictly follow the salary payment procedures of academics that make it compulsory for Department Heads to approve payments.

However, head of the Federation of University Teachers’ Association (FUTA) Dr. Nirmal Dewasiri told the media that all lecturers had received their salaries fro the month of May.

According to Dewasiri, the UGC tactic of trying to delay the salary payment was aimed at discouraging the university academics from continuing with their union action.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa met with representatives of FUTA last week to resolve the salary issue of the university lecturers. Although the meeting ended without reaching any settlement, another meeting is scheduled to take place with the President on June 3.
