May 29, 2011 12:49:44 AM - itnnews.lk

The Yaal Devi train has proceeded further on the peace track.

It was after 21 years that the train was operated up to Omantha  on the northern track. Earlier the service was extended to Vavuniya from Medawachchiya and thereafter to Omantha through Thandikulam. The train service will be extended to Palai from Omantha in the second phase and it will be further extended to Kankesanthurai from Palai in the third phase.

The Minister Kumara Welgama said that the rail track will be extended to Jaffna and from there to Kankesanthurai. He expressed confidence that development of rail tracks in the northern province would be completed in 2 years. He said that the Indian government has also provided credit lines in this connection. He oted that outsourcing will be required to complete the work in 2 years. He said that the railway department has to carry out maintenance work on other rail tracks. He noted that a good service could be provided if the employees of the Railway Department will carry out their work efficiently.

The rail tracks and the railway stations are being reconstructed with assistance from the private sector as well. The Singer Company has assisted in constructing the Omantha railway station. The rail track has been renovated up to Omantha at the expenditure of 500 million rupees jointly provided by the Railway Department and the Army.
