A group of workers from the Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Katunayake held a protest against the proposed pension scheme for the private sector.
Workers from the FTZ held a similar protest last Tuesday (24) as well. Workers from two factories in the FTZ had held today’s protest.
Head of the Inter Company Employees’ Union (ICEU), Wasantha Samaraisnghe told Colombo Page that the workers had staged the protest when several government members had arrived at the FTZ to educate the workers on the proposed pension scheme as part of the government’s programme to educate the working masses about it.
However, the police used tear gas to disperse the protestors when they had started to throw stones at the policemen who had tried to disperse them.
Meanwhile, Labor Minister Gamini Lokuge told the media that the proposed pension scheme was not applicable to the FTZ workers.
Lokuge has said that the scheme would not be applicable to FTZ workers due to requests made by parliamentarians, trade unionists and employees.
