The Inter Company Employees Union (ICEU) has said workers would resort to trade union action to secure the release of free trade zone (FTZ) workers who are in police custody following today’s protest.

A group of FTZ workers today protested against the proposed pension scheme fro the private sector.

Head of the ICEU, Wasnatha Samarasinghe told the media that while some workers were taken into police custody, there were a large number of workers who had been injured due to the police attack on the crowd.

He has said that over 40 persons were injured in the police attack and are receiving treatment at the Ragama and Negambo hospitals.

Samarasinghe has alleged that the police have used live bullets to disperse the FTZ protesters.

Meanwhile, Police Spokesperson SP Preshantha Jayakody has told the media that nine police officers including DIG Ravi Wijeyagunawardena, two ASPs and an OIC were injured during the clash between the police and the FTZ workers.
