A Special Sudden Disaster Management Unit will function in every office of the Regional Health Services Director.
Its purpose is to strengthen the people to confront any disastrous situation. There has been a high death toll and an increasing number of persons displaced due to situations such as the tsunami, torrential rains, floods and landslides in the past five year period. There is a dire need for a special programme to minimize accidents during such situations and control the spread of epidemic diseases. It is planned to meet health services including the management of patients, maintenance treatment, life security and direction to hospitals via the new Disaster Management Units. Hitherto such services were handled by the Sudden Disaster Management Unit under the Health Ministry. The establishment of such units at the regional level will help to fulfill emergency needs efficiently. The Health Ministry is desirous of soliciting the support of public institutions, the police and the forces of the area during sudden disasters.
