Work on the first stage of the Southern Expressway is due to end in July.
Construction on the stretch of the highway from Kottawa to Dodangoda is nearing completion. The Highway which will have two lanes is being built up to Matara. With the completion of work, it will be possible to reach Matara from Colombo within a very short period of one and a half hours. Work on several access roads to the highway is also nearing completion. Deputy Project Manager Kamal Edirisinghe said work on the first stage of the project is due to end in July. He recalled that the agreement for the launch of the express way was signed on 25th September 2005 with the Road Development Authority. About 95 percent of construction has been completed. Only some facilities such as putting up fences on either side of the highway and providing electricity are needed to be completed. He was optimistic that all these work could be completed by 30th July.
