May 31, 2011 11:55:19 AM - itnnews.lk

In the meantime a comprehensive investigation is being held into the clash in Katunayake yesterday.

A group of employees of the Free Trade Zone staged a demonstration against the proposed Pensions Bill. The police came under attack when they attempted to disperse the demonstrators. Police Media Spokesman SP. Prishantha Jayakody said that 25 members of the police including a DIG sustained injuries. He was DIG Ravi Wijayagunawardena, who is in-charge of the Puttalam area. He and 15 other police officers are being treated at the Colombo National Hospital. The Police Media Spokesman said nine police officers are being treated at the Police Hospital in Narahenpita. The Police came under attack by employees who were enraged due to attempts made by the police to remove the employees who were staging a protest obstructing the Averiwatta main road.

A group of demonstrators also suffered injuries. IGP Mahinda Balasuriya said that a special police team of the CID has been deployed to conduct inquiries. The Government had officially announced that the Free Trade Zone will be exempted from the private Sector Pensions Scheme. In spite of this announcement inquiries are directed as to who misled the workers to stage such a demonstration. The Police Chief pointed out that it will also be inquired into whether there had been a fault by the police officers.
