The JVP has said that the people’s power has once again proven to be stronger than the two thirds power enjoyed by the government in parliament.
JVP parliamentary group leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a press conference today that the continuous protests by the working masses have forced the government to withdraw the proposed pension scheme fro the private sector.
However, he said that the pension scheme has been temporarily withdrawn by the government until the conclusion of the local government elections in July.
He noted that the SLFP General Secretary who claimed yesterday morning that the pension scheme had to be implemented, made a completely opposition statement by evening saying it has been suspended.
According to Dissanayake, the SLFP Central Committee met last evening to discuss about the local government elections and therefore decided to temporarily withdraw the pension scheme until the conclusion of the lections due to the massive protest against it.
He said the pension scheme would be re-considered once the local government elections are concluded.
Dissanayake added that the private sector workers needed a proper pension scheme that benefited them and not the one proposed by the government, which does not benefit them.
