Estate sector trade unions today said that the talks between the unions and the employers to reach a consensus on a salary hike for the estate workers had failed.
Several estate sector trade unions and employers who are signatories to the collective agreement that decides on estate workers’ salaries, have failed to reach a consensus on a new collective agreement.
The Employment Federation of Ceylon (EFC) has told the media that the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) and Lanka Jathika Estate Workers Union that attended the discussion have turned down a fresh offer made by the employers.
The unions have turned down the offer claiming it was insufficient given the increasing cost of living.
Meanwhile, several other estate sector trade unions have threatened to launch union action demanding a daily wage of Rs. 700 to the estate workers.
