Two Police Officers interdicted over the Katunayake fiasco

Two Police Officers have been interdicted with regard to the Katunayake incident. The CID is continuing comprehensive investigations.

It was on Monday that a clash erupted between the workers of the Katunayake Free Trade Zone protesting against the proposed Pensions Bill and the Police who arrived there to disperse the demonstrators. Some Police Officers and demonstrators who were injured in this incident are still hospitalized for treatment. The President ordered the Police Chief to provide him with an immediate report while a one-member Committee has been appointed to probe the incident. The task is assigned to retired Supreme Court Judge Mahanama Tilakaratne. The related report is due to be handed over to the President within the next few days. Public property was damaged due to the incident. Among them are some Police vehicles.

Clarifying the present situation, Police Media Spokesman SP Preshantha Jayakody said about 25 Police Officers were injured in the clash. All of them are hospitalized. Seven of them were directed to the Eye Hospital for special treatment. These police officers are receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital, the Eye Hospital and the Police Hospital. The Police Media Spokesman said the CID is continuing inquiries. He added that a peaceful situation was now prevailing in the area.
