George Schroeder, the state’s first inspector general, has resigned.
“I had some problems with independence, and also the funding of the office was not independent,” said Schroeder, who was hired by Gov. Nikki Haley earlier this year to head up a new unit that would look into allegations of fraud, abuse and mismanagement at state agencies.
For example, Schroeder said Tuesday, the office of inspector general was set up in such a way that people he hired would be paid by various state agencies.
That would present a problem if he had to investigate the agency that one of his employees was paid by, Schroeder said Tuesday.
