A 15-year-old former Socastee High School student has been indicted by an Horry County grand jury on charges he shot at a school resource officer and took pipe bombs to school.
Christian Helms faces charges of attempted murder and three counts of transporting or possessing components of a destructive device, according to court records released Wednesday. If convicted, Helms faces up to 30 years in prison. He is being tried as an adult.
Prosecutors said last month that a trial date is set for August or the week of Sept. 5.
Helms’s attorney, Russell Long, withdrew a bond request for the teen on May 17 after learning of the dates the case is expected to be called for trial, he said.
Investigators say Helms, who was 14 at the time of the shooting, went into the office of Erik Karney, Socastee High’s school resource officer, with a loaded gun and two pipe bombs in his backpack.
