24 years had passed since the massacre of 31 Buddhist monks by the LTTE at Arantalawa.
Members of the Maha Sangha including the Chief Incumbent of the Maha Vapi Vihare in Ampara, the Ven. Hegoda Sri Indrasara Nayake Thera died in this ruthless attack unleashed by the LTTE. Samanera monks who were not aware of terrorism were also killed in this attack. This ruthless attack drew condemnation from not only the Buddhists but also all those who do not approve such murders. A Buddhist Shrine was built at the location and Buddha Statue placed there today. A sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi was also planted. Floral tributes were paid to the monument in which the names of the monks killed in the incident are mentioned. A large gathering representing the clergy and the laity was present.
