The Supreme Court has rejected five petitions challenging the leadership training programme organized for University students.
The rejection was made after a three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranaike took up the petitions for consideration. The petitions had stated that the Higher Education Minister had no powers to issue orders to make mandatory the participation of the University entrants in such a training programme. The State Counsel appearing on behalf of the Attorney General said that the programme was in place to mould a fully fledged undergraduate liberating them from the Advanced Level mentality. The Supreme Court turned down the petitions after considering the submissions made.
