A 31-year-old former resident of one of Columbias corrections department half-way houses pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal bank fraud in a scheme to steal more than $300,000 from a state corrections department bank account.
Crystal Dawn Bric was on probation and living at Columbias Restitution Center when she started using a state Probation, Pardon and Parole bank account to pay her rent, utilities and other incidental expenses. She got the account number and routing code from a check drawn on the account, authorities said.
In her guilty plea, she admitted opening credit card accounts with friends Social Security numbers and paying the bills with state funds between 2007 and 2009.
In all, state auditors determined that Bric stole about $337,944 from the bank account.
She could be sentenced to 30 years in prison and assessed a $1 million fine.
