What may have been a tempestuous love affair stretching two decades ended in the shooting death of Irmo public works employee John Henry Mayer, 43, of Chapin.
According to a statement from the Newberry Sheriffs Department, Mayers body, with two gunshots to the chest, was discovered Saturday, May 25 in the Sumter National Forest.
Investigators believe that Mayer agreed to meet his long-time girlfriend Brandy Lenore Smith, 34, and her roommate Timothy Carroll Wise, 30, both of Newberry, at a secluded wooded area off Judy B road in Maybinton on May 7, 2001, nearly a month after Smith took a restraining order out against Mayer.
All three were drinking alcohol and an argument broke out leading to Mayers shooting by Smith, authorities said.
Smith and Wise became suspects in Mayers disappearance early on, authorities said.
