The tourism development project proposed by the government in several islands in the Kalpitiya area has come under fire by environmental and fisheries organizations.
The government proposed the development of 14 islands in the Kalpitiya area aimed at promoting tourism.
The organizations have expressed concerns over the huge development projects that would take place in the islands after a land grab by the private sector.
Among the organizations that have voiced concern are the National Fisheries Solidarity Movement (NAFSO), All Ceylon Fisher Folk Union and Praja Abhilasha Network.
According to the organizations, the proposed tourism project would pose many difficulties to the people already living in the islands.
They have pointed out that the land grabbing has resulted in an environmental destruction mangrove forests and pother eco systems being destroyed.
Other issues faced by the people in these areas are the loss of the anchorage point, forced evictions and loss of land with illegal land deeds.
