The UNP has called on the government to take steps to increase the salaries of the private sector workers.
The party has also alleged that several workers from the free trade zone (FTZ) in Katunayake were still missing after the police attack on them.
UNP parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake has told the media that it is the FTZ workers who have complained that some of their colleagues were missing.
The MP called on the government to ensure the safety of the FTZ workers and to locate those who are reportedly missing.
According to Karunanayake, the workers wanted a pay hike instead of a pension scheme that takes money out of them.
Meanwhile, UNP parliamentarian Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena told a press conference that the Board of Investment (BoI) has still not paid the Rs. 1 million compensation due to the slain FTZ worker Roshen Chanaka’s family.
