A survey conducted by the Kelaniya University has revealed that the cause for Kidney disease which is rife in the North Central Province is the Arsenic composition in agri chemicals. A news conference was held to provide details of the survey.
Many in the North Central Province are suffering from an unidentified kidney disease. The Science Faculty of the Kelaniya University which conducted tests has attributed this to the presence of Arsenic, a poisonous chemical, in chemical fertilizer, insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides, bactericides and fungicides. The tests were carried out by a group of scientists including Dr. Channa Jayasumana and Dr. K.S. Dahanayake, under the guidance of Prof. Nalin de Silva. The tests confirmed that the poisonous chemical had been absorbed not only by soil but also was mixed with water.
At a news conference Customs Directors Athula Lankadeva and Samantha Gunasekara said they have detained six fertilizer containers at the Harbour to examine whether they contain the Arsenic poisonous chemical. Parliamentarian Thilanga Sumathipala was present at the news briefing.
