A local group is pushing efforts to make the center of South Carolina's $18 billion tourism industry a smoke-free area.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports that the nonprofit Smoke Free Horry cites survey figures showing that an overwhelming majority of the county's residents believe secondhand smoke causes health problems. Organization spokesman George DuRant wants visitors to see a progressive county that prohibits lighting up a cigarette. But organizers admit a long road lies ahead before they reach their goal.
The group says more than 2,000 online petitions have been signed, urging lawmakers to create nonsmoking policies in the county.
Surfside Beach and Atlantic Beach already ban smoking, but Horry County Council Chairman Tom Rice a countywide ban isn't on the horizon and he wouldn't support one.
