Columbia ballet king William Starrett hopes customers will do a double-take when they see his new store in The Vista – and the clothes in it.
Starrett opened Double Takes at 1211 Lincoln St. – between Starbucks and Cupcake – Thursday.
“It’s another sort of form of artistic expression,” said Starrett, artistic director of the Columbia City Ballet and co-owner of the Columbia Conservatory of Dance.
The store — which has a theatrical flair, right down to its bathroom decor — sells “new, vintage and recycled” clothing on its roughly 1,000-square-foot sales floor, Starrett said. The store has an additional 400 square feet downstairs for storage and prep work.
“I’ve always been into fashion and clothes,” said Starrett, whose ballet season runs from about Labor Day through March. “You start thinking, ‘You know when I retire, I want to do that.’ And I started thinking, ‘I’m not going to retire until I’m 60 or 70.’”
