The President inspected the constructions of the Southern Expressway which links the West and the South.
The President inspected the construction from Makumbura in Kottawa which is the starting point of the Expressway from the direction of Colombo. The President met with Engineers and Advisors and issued relevant instructions. The Colombo Matara Expressway is being constructed at the cost of 90 billion rupees. This would decrease the time taken to travel between Colombo and Matara by half. The President inspected the expressway from Henpita, Munamalgahawatta, Gotakirilla Junction in the Kalutara District and Elpitiya, Kurundugahahethemma to Galle. The Ministers and Government officials of the relevant districts were also present. The Southern expressway will provide massive economic benefits to the country and links with the Colombo Outer Circular Road to minimize traffic congestion.
Meanwhile President Rajapaksa also visited the new Bus stand in Galle. The President visited the Galle bus stand after inspecting the Southern Expressway. He observed the construction of the modern bus stand constructed to develop Galle town following the destruction caused by the tsunami. Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkoday and Parliamentarians Ramesh Pathirana, Nishantha Muthuhettigama and Galle Mayor Methsiri Silva also participated in the occasion.
