Army Helps Japan

Jun 11, 2011 3:20:34 PM - thesundayleader.lk

Kunio Takahashi, Japan’s Ambassador in Colombo, on Wednesday feted 15 army personnel to dinner.

They were a contingent sent by the Government to assist in disaster relief work after north of Japan was hit by an earthquake and tsunami in March, leaving 28,000 dead or missing.  Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya speaking at the event said that they originally planned to send a much bigger contingent, a team of some 150; but due to logistical reasons that number was pruned  down to 15.

Airfare was met by the Government, while the contingent which had to “rough it out” in Japan had their costs incurred there, met by their hosts.
