The S.C. Budget and Control Board on Tuesday unanimously approved the sale to an Upstate developer of the 165-acre State Mental Hospital campus on Bull Street in Columbia.
The sale has been one of the most anticipated and significant land sales in Columbia history.
I am glad to see this finally coming to an end. Its been kicked around, torn apart and put back together, said Hugh Leatherman, chairman of the Senate finance committee. Its something the city of Columbia needs.
Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom called the sale bittersweet.
Its like New York City selling Central Park to Donald Trump, he said, calling the campus a state crown jewel and saying the sale is going to cause a lump in peoples throat.
