Make Poson more meaningful – President’s message

President Rajapaksa in his Poson Day message has called on the nation to make Poson more meaningful by rallying round to ensure a prosperous country.

The message: “An intelligent and civilized nation emerged in Sri Lanka with the advent of Arahant Mahinda Thera who delivered the message of the Dhamma. The establishment of Buddha Sasana in the country ensures the protection of all living beings. Our nation achieved excellence in the social, cultural, economic and political arenas by following the new Buddhist path as shown by Arahant Mahinda. The people of this nation filled with the noble values of kindness, mercy and compassion earned plaudits from other nations. Buddhism shows the means to end suffering, leaves no room for division. The message given by Arahant Mahinda Thera stresses the importance of treating all races and religion equally. As such the President said the State policy of honouring the Buddha Sasana ensures close amity between all communities.

Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne has said that a Buddhist who can conduct the mind, body and word properly will never be deceived by another’s utterings, grope in the dark or indulge in sinful acts. Therefore, he said that everyone should be mindful on this Poson Day to be a person who conducts the mind, body and word for the benefit of self, society, the Sasana and the country. He said this is the most opportune time to awaken the true Buddhist in your self.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe said that with Sri Lankans including King Devanampiyatissa embracing Buddhist with the arrival of Arahant Mahinda to the island the era of building of a new society and culture commenced.

Chief Incumbent of the Atamasthana, the Ven. Pallegama Sirinivasa Thera pointed out that that this Poson was of special significance to the Sri Lankans at a time when the 2600th Sambuddhatva Jayanthi was being commemorated.
