Haley vetoes borrowing by three school districts

As promised, Gov. Nikki Haley has vetoed local legislation that would
have allowed three, struggling S.C. school districts to borrow money to
offset the loss of federal stimulus dollars.
In her veto messages, Haley said she is sympathetic with the financial
plight of the Hampton 2, Colleton County and Florence 4 school
districts. But, she added, "We should not fund short-term operational
costs with long-term debt backed by taxpayers."

-- also have requested the right to sell bonds to raise money to pay for
The state Senate is scheduled to discuss overriding Haley's vetoes
Thursday. Florence 4 officials have said that school district will close
if it does not get the additional money. That would set the stage for a
forced merger of the rural school district into another school system.
