The Inter Company Employees Union (ICEU) says that employees in the free trade zone (FTZ) are not willing to come forward to give details about the recent clash in the Katunayake FTZ due to the fear of being harassed and intimidated.
The ICEU said that some FTZ employees are faced with issues related to their salaries and bonuses due to their involvement in the recent protests held at the FTZ against the private sector pension scheme.
ICEU head Wasantha Samarasinghe said that the government needed to ensure that the rights of the employees are not curtailed.
He said that while hundreds of FTZ workers have been questioned by the authorities, they had also visited the homes of several FTZ employees as well.
According to Samarasinghe, the ICCEU has already called on state authorities to intervene to bring normalcy to the Katunayake FTZ.
