President Rajapaksa reaches Russia to a very warm welcome, unveiling another new chapter in relations between the two countries.The President who left for Russia to participate in the 15th International Economic Forum in Saint Petersburg, reached the Pulkovo International Airport this afternoon. He was accorded a warm welcome by the Deputy Governor of St. Petersburg Sergei Alexei Ivanovich. The Economic Forum which commenced today will continue for three days. This is the first time that Sri Lanka is participating in this conference which comprises leading countries such as Russia, China, Spain and Finland as members. Themed “The Rising Leadership for a New Era”, the conference will draw special attention to realizing global development and expanding technology.
The President is visiting Russia for the second time. He undertook an official visit in February last year at the invitation of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The President was conferred an honorary Degree by the Moscow Friendship University appreciating the various services discharged by him in different sectors including the valuable service done for world peace, successfully cracking down on terrorism and on behalf of education and culture between the two countries. This University confers honorary degrees for state leaders acclaiming their services in various sectors. The President was the 6th such state Leader to be honoured.
